Course Classes
Bench work week 1 - (Closed)
hello all and welcome to the bench class:
we will be focusing on specific skills and work with the bench over a 6 week period.
Please all introduce yourselves in the forum and we will be ready to go!
Week1
whynuse a bench?
platform training adds an new dimension to your training!
By providing a boundary for your dog to work on- you will be awakening many opportunities for proprioception to be enhanced.
Limb awareness is greatly enhanced through the use of platforms- it provides a boundary for your dog to think about its body and foot placement in a different way than on the floor. You will see clearer form from your dog, and more effort to consider posture.
Good form is the key to correct muscle engagement and body awareness-
just by using a simple platform you can encourage your dog to work correctly and your results in terms of balance and limb ontrol will be imporoved.
Form
form is key to success!
We will talk a lot about form during the course- essentially we need limbs to track forward and be in symmetry. Back neutral and flat ( not roached) and stifles tucked in neatly for tuck sits. The head should be tracking forward and not looking up!
Equipment
ensure your bench is long enough for your dog- a bench that is too short will restrict posture and may cause reaching. Ideally a 4 ft bench is fine.
please ensure your bench has a non slip top and that the surface under the bench is also suitable - ie carpet or grass or sand or use a yoga mat.
youmwill receive 4 risers with your bench - we will use these to create incline and decline and also use for other exercises on the course.
